Haiti Crisis Response

In the early morning of August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the southern peninsula of Haiti. Access to food, water, electricity, water, communication and transportation is critically difficult. Exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, Tropical Storm Grace hit the island two days later. All of this comes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the turmoil that followed the recent assassination of Haiti’s president.

Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers as these are very trying times for so many. Immediate needs include food, water and shelter. PWS&D is planning to respond through partners at Canadian Foodgrains Bank and ACT Alliance.

Pray for Afghanistan

Join us in praying for the people of Afghanistan given the rapidly changing security situation. PWS&D has a long history of support for relief and development programs in Afghanistan. For the last 20 years, we have responded to urgent food needs and supported girls’ education and maternal and child health projects to help improve livelihoods in the country. PWS&D is in regular contact with our partner with the hope that projects can still be implemented under these new conditions. Pray for safety and security for our partners, their staff and all those who are experiencing heightened anxiety because of recent developments. May God’s peace be with them all.

Consider Sponsoring Afghan Refugees

The Canadian government is opening the doors to 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan and is looking to private sponsors to help provide the necessary support. If your congregation is interested in sponsoring Afghan refugees, please contact sponsorship@presbyterian.ca for more information.

Lebanon Crisis: One Year Later

August 4 marked one year since a devasting explosion ripped through Beirut, Lebanon. Many people died, and hundreds of thousands lost their homes and businesses. While life in Lebanon has not returned to normal due to persistent economic and political crises, PWS&D has been responding over the past year through partners at the ACT Alliance and Canadian Foodgrains Bank. With your support we have helped families rebuild their lives and businesses.

Join us to Ride!

On Saturday, October 2, join PWS&D in the Ride for Refuge and help us raise funds for PWS&D's food security programs. World hunger has worsened due to the pandemic, conflict and climate change, so every effort is essential. Along with the classic cycling and walking options, participants can also choose from various activities that can be done at home and virtually. Your participation will help deliver seeds, tools, and training to farmers to help increase crop yields, improve nutrition, and address the impacts of climate change.
