Afghanistan Food Crisis Appeal

With the rapidly worsening food situation in Afghanistan, we are called to help as many people as possible. In October, the United Nations estimated that over 18 million Afghans—half of the country’s population—were facing a humanitarian crisis. The numbers will only increase as winter sets in. In response, PWS&D is planning a food assistance project with a long-standing partner in Afghanistan. Cash transfers to the most vulnerable families will help them buy food and pay for critical items, with the hope of livelihood recovery in the spring.

All About Growing Projects

Join us on Saturday, November 6 at 1:30 pm Eastern/10:30 am Pacific for a conversation about growing projects—a farming initiative that allows both rural and urban congregations to support food security around the world. We will be joined by Henry Reinders from Canadian Foodgrains Bank and PWS&D Director Guy Smagghe for this virtual event.

Ride for Refuge Raises over $30,000!

On Saturday, October 2, 77 passionate participants from across Canada biked and walked in the Ride for Refuge in support of PWS&D’s food security programs. The effort of participants and the generosity of sponsors will help farmers learn sustainable agricultural practices that address the impacts of climate change and improve nutrition for families. Thank you to everyone who participated or sponsored riders this year!

Champions’ Corner

Is your congregation doing something this Advent to raise support for PWS&D? We’d love to hear about it! Share your pictures and stories on the PWS&D Champions’ Corner Facebook group, or send them to Emma Clarke at eclarke@presbyterian.ca.

Ps. Don’t forget about Gather2Grow, a conference for PWS&D Champions happening on Saturday, November 6 at 12:00 pm Eastern/9:00 am Pacific.

PWS&D and the Climate Crisis

As a member of the ACT Alliance, PWS&D is present at COP26. The global climate conference aims to find pathways for a sustainable future for people and the planet. We are engaged in the For the Love for Creation—an ecumenical initiative encouraging Canadians to come together to learn and act for climate justice. PWS&D also works with small-holder farmers around the planet to build resilience to climate change through sustainable farming and conservation agriculture.
